GTM Strategy
Build a set of commercial choices, not a collection of tactics. Use this skill for a new market entry, a reset of a weak motion, or an annual/quarterly GTM plan. Use specialist skills after the strategic choices are clear.
Establish the decision context
Identify the business model, product maturity, primary objective, time horizon, geography, current proof, constraints, and decision owner. Separate what is known from what is assumed. If any of these would substantially change the motion, ask for them before selecting a strategy.
Assess the opportunity through four lenses: customer pain and urgency, reachable segments, differentiated ability to win, and viable economics. Do not treat total market size as a decision by itself; focus on the reachable initial wedge.
Make choices explicit
Recommend a primary segment and use case, a category or frame of reference, a promise supported by evidence, a route to market, and a sequencing thesis. Explain what will deliberately not be prioritized now. For each major choice, name the evidence, assumptions, risks, and the fastest validation method.
Choose the motion based on buying complexity and economics: self-serve, sales-led, product-led with sales assist, partner-led, or a hybrid. The label alone is insufficient—specify how awareness, evaluation, conversion, onboarding, and expansion work together.
Deliverable
Produce a decision-ready strategy document with:
- Executive recommendation and the decision it enables.
- Market context, evidence, and material assumptions.
- Ideal customer, priority use case, and buyer committee.
- Positioning thesis, offer, and chosen GTM motion.
- Channel and sales approach, including handoffs.
- A phased 90-day or requested-horizon plan with owners, leading indicators, and milestones.
- Risks, trade-offs, and the next three validation tests.
Use ranges and scenarios for uncertain economics. Do not promise results, invent customer evidence, or authorize launches, spend, pricing changes, or outbound activity.
