Alternatives decision guide

Oxylabs alternatives for browser-based AI workflows

This guide is for teams that use Oxylabs, or are pricing it, and want an alternative for browser-based AI workflows: agents that drive a hosted browser, call scraping tools over MCP, or need page content in a format a model can read. It also serves the classic buyer of proxies or a scraper API who wants a second option. For agents that need a real browser, Browserbase, Browser Use and Oxylabs meter browser time and proxy traffic differently, so the comparisons below set out each pricing model. Firecrawl, Apify and ScrapingBee package scraping as an LLM-ready API, a marketplace of prebuilt scrapers or a credit plan. In Cheetah's reading, Bright Data is closest to Oxylabs in product shape on proxies and unblocking. Every product fact cites the vendor's own site, docs or pricing as they stood on 2026-09-23 and 2026-09-24, and the verdicts are Cheetah's judgement.

5 reasons teams replace Oxylabs

  • The workload is an agent that stays in a browser for minutes at a time, and paying per GB of Headless Browser traffic, from a $300 monthly plan, fits worse than a plan built around browser hours.[7]
  • Agents need a browser tool with no local process: the documented Oxylabs route for Claude Desktop and Cursor runs Playwright MCP through npx on Node.js 18 or later, and on the hosted Oxylabs MCP server the only tool that clicks and fills forms is AI Studio's ai_browser_agent.[9][4]
  • Forecasting is hard because the rate per 1,000 results changes by target and with JavaScript rendering, so a mixed workload is difficult to map onto a plan's result allowance.[2]
  • The job only needs LLM-ready page content, and proxies, per-target parsers and datasets are more product than the team will use.[1]
  • A security or procurement review asks for a second source of residential proxies and unblocking, so a single outage or contract change does not stop collection.

Short answer

For browser-based AI work, start with Browserbase if agents need managed browsers, a hosted MCP server and plans that include browser hours and proxy GB, or Browser Use if you would rather hand a plain-language task to a hosted agent and pay model cost plus 20 percent, plus browser time and proxy traffic. Firecrawl suits teams that mostly need clean Markdown or JSON from pages. Bright Data is, in our reading, the closest in product shape for proxies and unblocking, while Apify and ScrapingBee replace per-result rates with a marketplace of prebuilt scrapers or a credit plan. Keep Oxylabs when its residential proxies, scraper API and CDP browser already cover your stack under one account.[12][13][18][19][22][26][28][1][8]

  • Oxylabs bills Headless Browser traffic per GB with proxies included, while Browserbase and Browser Use bill browser time plus proxy traffic per GB, so estimate both the page weight and the session length of your own workload before comparing totals.[7][12][18]
  • All seven products document an MCP route for agents, but setup differs: the hosted Oxylabs server takes credentials as HTTP headers, while Apify and Firecrawl also offer browser sign-in.[4][30][27][20][24][13][17]
  • Firecrawl is built around LLM-ready output such as Markdown and structured JSON; Oxylabs offers Markdown through its MCP scraper tool and AI Studio.[19][4][11]
  • For the proxy and unblocking layer itself, Bright Data is, in our judgement, the closest in product shape; Apify and ScrapingBee fit teams that would rather pay in platform usage or request credits than in per-target result rates.[22][23][26][28][2]

What you are replacing

Oxylabs sells proxies (residential from $2.5 per GB across 175M+ IPs, plus mobile, datacenter and ISP), a Web Scraper API billed per 1,000 successful results with a separate per-GB charge for media downloads, Web Unblocker, a Headless Browser priced per GB, and AI Studio, a no-code suite of AI scraping apps. For agents it documents a hosted MCP server at mcp.oxylabs.io/mcp that exposes Web Scraper API and AI Studio tools, and a separate route that connects Playwright MCP to the Headless Browser. Web Scraper API requests use API user credentials created in the dashboard, which are separate from the account login.[1][2][11][4][9][3]

Alternatives compared with Oxylabs

  1. Browserbase compared with Oxylabs

Verdict: Choose Browserbase when agents need managed cloud browsers they can drive with Playwright, Puppeteer, Selenium or the Stagehand framework, on plans built around browser hours with proxy GB metered on top, and reachable through a hosted MCP server. Stay with Oxylabs when the browser work depends on its residential proxy pool and pages are light enough that paying per GB stays predictable.[12][13][7]

    Choose Browserbase when

    • Sessions are long and interactive, such as logins or multi-step forms, and a plan with included browser hours and proxy GB suits the budget better than buying traffic alone.[12]
    • The team wants to prototype on a $0 plan with 3 concurrent browsers and 1 browser hour before committing budget.[12]
    • The Developer plan costs $20 a month for 25 concurrent browsers, 100 browser hours and 1GB of proxies, with overage per extra hour and GB, a smaller first paid plan than the $300 Starter plan for the Oxylabs Headless Browser.[12][7]
    • Its hosted MCP server, built on Stagehand, lets a model navigate, click, fill forms, extract content and take screenshots.[13]

    Keep Oxylabs when

    • You want residential proxy traffic inside the browser's per-GB price; the Oxylabs Headless Browser includes its 175M+ residential proxies, while Browserbase meters proxies separately after the plan's included GB.[7][12]
    • Your JavaScript-heavy pages only need rendering, not an agent driving a browser: Web Scraper API plans include headless rendering inside scraper requests, but rendered results are billed at a higher rate, $1.35 per 1,000 on Micro against $0.50 to $1.15 without rendering.[2][3]

    Limitations to account for

    • Every Browserbase session has a minimum runtime of one minute, even if it is closed sooner.[14]
    • The Free plan caps sessions at 15 minutes, keeps data for 7 days and does not include CAPTCHA solving.[12]
    Browserbase compared with Oxylabs
    CriterionOxylabsBrowserbaseWhat it means
How browser use is billedThe Headless Browser Starter plan is $300 a month for 50GB at $6 per GB, and Oxylabs says it adds no extra costs for proxies or browser hours.[7]Developer is $20 a month with 100 browser hours, then $0.12 an hour, plus 1GB of proxies, then $12 per GB; Startup is $99 with 500 hours, then $0.10 an hour, and 5GB, then $10 per GB. Search, Fetch and agent runs have their own allowances.[12]Oxylabs bills Headless Browser traffic per GB with proxies included; Browserbase bills browser hours beyond the plan allowance plus proxy GB beyond the included 1GB or 5GB. Blocking images and media cuts Oxylabs traffic, as its docs recommend, and closing idle sessions cuts Browserbase hours.[7][8][12]
ConcurrencyHeadless Browser accounts get 100 concurrent sessions and 10 new sessions per second by default, and support can raise both.[8]Concurrency is 3 browsers on Free, 25 on Developer, 100 on Startup and 250+ on Scale, with session creation capped at 5, 25, 50 and 150+ per minute.[14]At about 100 parallel sessions the two look similar on paper. Browserbase ties the ceiling to the plan you buy; Oxylabs sets a default you ask support to lift.[14][8]
MCP for agentsOxylabs documents connecting Claude Desktop or Cursor to the Headless Browser by running Playwright MCP through npx against its CDP endpoint, which requires Node.js 18 or later.[9]Browserbase runs a hosted MCP server; the client configuration is one URL on mcp.browserbase.com with the API key as a query parameter.[13]Browserbase agent access needs no local process. The documented Oxylabs browser route runs an MCP server through npx on the user's own machine.[13][9]
CAPTCHAs and stealthCAPTCHA handling is turned on per session with the solve_captcha connection parameter and is off by default.[8]Automatic CAPTCHA solving and basic stealth mode come with Developer and Startup; Scale adds advanced stealth and verified agents.[12]Both handle CAPTCHAs, Oxylabs as a per-session option and Browserbase on its paid plans, so test the sites your agent actually visits instead of relying on either feature list.[8][12]
  2. Browser Use compared with Oxylabs

Verdict: Choose Browser Use when you want to hand a plain-language task to a hosted agent over an API, or rent remote browsers at $0.02 an hour plus proxy traffic (residential at $5 per GB, on by default) for your own agent code, paying from prepaid credits instead of a monthly plan. Stay with Oxylabs when you want committed browser volume, proxies from the same vendor as your scraper API, or AI Studio's no-code apps.[18][16][7][1][11]

    Choose Browser Use when

    • Usage is bursty or still experimental, and prepaid credits that never expire suit the budget better than a fixed monthly commitment.[18]
    • Developers may want to self-host the agent loop later, since Browser Use publishes an MIT-licensed open-source library.[15]
    • Browser Use Agents take a task through POST /runs and return the result, billed at model cost plus a 20 percent fee, with browser time and traffic on top.[16][18]
    • Eligible new signups get $15 of free credits once, without a card.[18]

    Keep Oxylabs when

    • Browser traffic is steady and large, since the Headless Browser Premium plan brings the rate down to $4.70 per GB with proxies included.[7]
    • People outside engineering use AI Studio apps such as AI-Scraper and Browser Agent next to the developer stack.[11]

    Limitations to account for

    • Self-serve concurrency starts at 10 sessions and rises with lifetime spend, reaching 50 at $200 and 1,000 at $25,000; Enterprise offers custom concurrency.[18]
    • No subscription plans are offered; Enterprise terms are custom.[18]
    Browser Use compared with Oxylabs
    CriterionOxylabsBrowser UseWhat it means
Price structureHeadless Browser plans step from 100GB for $550 a month at $5.50 per GB to 300GB for $1,410 at $4.70 per GB, with custom pricing from 400GB, and each plan is requested as an offer.[7]Browsers cost $0.02 an hour, rounded up to whole minutes with a one-minute minimum, plus traffic: residential proxies at $5 per GB, on by default, or $0.20 per GB direct or through your own proxy. Credits start at $5 with no expiry.[18]Browser Use has no commitment and a low hourly rate, but proxy traffic is billed separately; Oxylabs folds proxies into its per-GB price. Compare totals using the page weight of your own targets.[18][7]
Hosted agentThe hosted Oxylabs MCP server includes ai_browser_agent, which navigates, clicks and fills forms from a prompt, and it requires an AI Studio API key.[4]The v4 Agent API accepts a natural-language task at POST /runs; clients poll its status and fetch the full run once it finishes.[16]Both offer a browser agent you steer with a prompt. Browser Use documents it as a REST API; on Oxylabs it is an AI Studio app and an MCP tool.[16][4][11]
Driving the browser from codeHeadless Browser connects over CDP at wss://hb.oxylabs.io, with examples for Playwright in Python and Node.js and Puppeteer in Node.js; credentials go in the URL because header authentication is not supported.[8]POST /browsers returns a cdpUrl that works with a Browser Use agent, Playwright, Puppeteer or Selenium, and a PATCH call stops the browser.[16]Existing Playwright or Puppeteer scripts can move between the two by changing how they connect: on Browser Use you first create a browser with POST /browsers to get its cdpUrl, while Oxylabs takes a fixed wss URL with credentials. Browser Use also documents Selenium.[16][8]
Signed-in sessionsPersistent profiles save cookies and localStorage between sessions, with a default cap of 5 profiles, and sticky sessions last up to 24 hours.[8]Browser profiles back authenticated tasks: run_session accepts a profile_id, and the list_browser_profiles MCP tool lets an agent pick one.[17]Both can keep an agent logged in across runs. If you manage many accounts, plan around the Oxylabs default of 5 saved profiles.[8][17]
  3. Firecrawl compared with Oxylabs

Verdict: Choose Firecrawl when the goal is page content a model can read, such as Markdown or structured JSON, from one credit-metered API that also covers search, crawling and browser interaction. Stay with Oxylabs when you want proxies and a remote browser on the same account as the scraper API.[19][21][1]

    Choose Firecrawl when

    • The pipeline feeds retrieval for RAG or an agent, and most pages only need to become clean text.
    • Engineers want to try it before creating an account; Firecrawl documents a first scrape request that needs no API key.[19]
    • One shared credit balance pays for scrape, crawl, map, search, monitoring and Interact browser minutes.[21]
    • Its MCP server can be used keyless within daily limits, through browser sign-in, or with an API key.[20]

    Keep Oxylabs when

    • You also buy residential or datacenter proxies and want them on the same account as the scraper API.[1]

    Limitations to account for

    • On Scrape and Crawl, the JSON, Question and Highlight formats add 4 credits per page.[21]
    • Hobby, Standard and Growth credits do not roll over to the next month.[21]
    Firecrawl compared with Oxylabs
    CriterionOxylabsFirecrawlWhat it means
Charges for failed requestsOxylabs does not charge for attempts that end in 5xx or 6xx errors on its side, but counts 2xx and 4xx responses as successful.[2]A scrape that returns no result is not charged, while a page that answers with 403 or 404 is returned and costs 1 credit.[21]Both bill for pages that come back as a 4xx, so clean dead URLs out of large lists before running them on either service.[2][21]
Entry pricingA Web Scraper API trial covers up to 2,000 results with no card, and the Micro plan is $49 a month for up to 98,000 results.[2]The Free plan gives 1,000 credits a month; Hobby is $16 a month billed yearly or $19 monthly for 5,000 credits, and Standard is $83 billed yearly for 100,000.[21]Firecrawl's free credits refresh every month, which suits slow evaluations. How far the Oxylabs Micro allowance goes depends on which targets you scrape and whether they need rendering.[21][2]
Output for modelsThe universal_scraper MCP tool scrapes any URL with optional JavaScript rendering and geo-targeting and returns Markdown or HTML.[4]Scrape returns a page as Markdown, HTML or structured JSON, and Firecrawl also lists screenshots among its outputs.[19]For Markdown into a model, both work. Structured JSON from an arbitrary page is built into Firecrawl's Scrape; on Oxylabs it comes from AI Studio's AI-Scraper or a custom parser in the Web Scraper API.[19][11][2]
Agent accessThe Oxylabs MCP server runs hosted at mcp.oxylabs.io/mcp or locally with uvx oxylabs-mcp, and is registered on the MCP Registry, PyPI and Smithery.[4]Firecrawl's MCP server is hosted on mcp.firecrawl.dev, with an OAuth URL for browser sign-in and a separate URL for API-key bearer tokens.[20]Firecrawl's keyless mode lets someone try Search, Scrape and Parse within daily limits without credentials; Oxylabs needs Web Scraper API or AI Studio credentials before any of its tools works.[20][4]
  4. Bright Data compared with Oxylabs

Verdict: Choose Bright Data when you want a similar shape of product to Oxylabs, with proxies, an unlocker, scraper APIs and a remote browser, from a second supplier, or when agents should start on a free monthly MCP allowance. Stay with Oxylabs when its per-result Web Scraper API plans already fit your targets.[22][24][2]

    Choose Bright Data when

    • Procurement needs a second source for proxies and unblocking with similar product coverage.[22]
    • You want to evaluate a remote browser on a free monthly allowance; the Browser API free tier includes 1GB a month.[25]
    • Bright Data's MCP server runs hosted or self-hosted, and every new account includes 5,000 free requests a month.[24]
    • Its Browser API pricing lists unlimited concurrent sessions, and the Web Unlocker pricing lists unlimited concurrency.[25][23]

    Keep Oxylabs when

    • Your security review has already accepted Oxylabs' trust documentation, which lists ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and SOC 2 Type 2 for Scraper API and Web Unblocker.[5]
    • Switching cost matters: moving means re-testing every target and replacing the dedicated API user credentials that Oxylabs requests use.[3]

    Limitations to account for

    • Bright Data prices each product on its own page, so a mixed workload means reading several price lists.[22]
    • The MCP free tier is one account-level pool of 5,000 credits a month, shared by all users on a team account.[24]
    Bright Data compared with Oxylabs
    CriterionOxylabsBright DataWhat it means
Proxy networkOxylabs lists 175M+ residential IPs, with residential proxies from $2.5 per GB, mobile from $3.5 per GB and datacenter from $0.7 per IP.[1]Bright Data advertises 400M+ proxy IPs from 195 countries, sold as residential, ISP and datacenter networks.[22]Headline pool sizes do not show how well either network covers the countries and sites you need, so test both on your own targets before comparing on IP counts.[1][22]
Remote browserHeadless Browser sessions can be pinned to a country, state or city through URL parameters, and a residential exit IP can be held for up to 1,440 minutes.[8]The Browser API supports Puppeteer, Playwright and Selenium with built-in proxies and unlocking.[25]Oxylabs puts geo and exit-IP control in the connection URL. Confirm how Bright Data exposes the same controls for the locations you need.[8]
Unblocker billing unitWeb Unblocker is priced per GB: a free trial covers 1GB without a credit card, and monthly plans start at 8GB.[10]Web Unlocker is priced per 1,000 requests, with 5K free requests a month, and the Scale plan includes 383K requests.[23]Oxylabs meters unblocking by traffic and Bright Data by request, so compare the two using the page sizes and request counts of your own targets.[10][23]
Unblocker featuresWeb Unblocker lists a proxy-like single entry node, JavaScript rendering and session control that reuses the same proxy across requests.[10]Every Web Unlocker plan lists batch and scheduled collection, data parsing to JSON or CSV and webhook or API delivery.[23]Oxylabs presents its unblocker as a proxy you plug into existing code, while Bright Data lists collection, parsing and delivery features on the unlocker plan. Choose by whether you want to keep your own pipeline or hand more of it over.[10][23]
  5. Apify compared with Oxylabs

Verdict: Choose Apify when ready-made scrapers for specific sites, or a platform to host your own, matter more than a proxy network, and when agents should be able to find and run those scrapers over MCP. Stay with Oxylabs when you want per-target result rates, with a separate rate for JavaScript rendering and a per-GB media download charge, rather than a mix of compute, proxy, storage, data transfer and per-event Actor charges.[26][27][2]

    Choose Apify when

    • Your targets are already covered by a ready-made Actor in the Apify Store.[26]
    • The team writes its own scrapers and wants hosted runs with datasets, key-value stores and request queues around them.[26]
    • Apify's MCP server lets agents discover and run Store Actors and read their results, over hosted Streamable HTTP with OAuth or a local stdio server.[27]
    • The hosted MCP server adds inferred output schemas to Actor tools, so an agent can see the structure of results before calling an Actor.[27]

    Keep Oxylabs when

    • Finance wants a plan that maps to a result count per target, such as up to 98,000 results on the $49 Micro plan when scraping Amazon.[2]

    Limitations to account for

    • Unused prepaid usage does not roll over and expires at the end of each billing cycle.[26]
    • On the Free plan, access is blocked once the prepaid usage runs out, until the next monthly cycle.[26]
    • Store Actors are priced either per event or by the platform usage their runs consume, so cost differs from one Actor to the next.[26]
    Apify compared with Oxylabs
    CriterionOxylabsApifyWhat it means
Billing unitOn the Micro plan, 1,000 successful results cost $0.50 for Amazon, $1.00 for Google and $1.15 for other sites, or $1.35 with JavaScript rendering, and media downloads cost $3 per GB.[2]Plans bundle prepaid usage, $19 on Starter and $199 on Scale, spent on compute units at $0.20 and $0.16, proxies, storage and data transfer, while Store Actors charge per event or per usage.[26]Oxylabs cost is set by target and rendering, plus media download traffic. Apify cost depends on which Actor runs, through its per-event price or the compute, proxy, storage and data transfer its runs use, so price a sample run of each Actor you plan to rely on.[2][26]
Prebuilt scrapersDedicated sources such as amazon and google return structured JSON when a request sets parse to true.[3]The Apify Store offers ready-made Actors, and developers who publish Actors there get paid.[26]The Apify Store includes Actors published by outside developers; Oxylabs documents its own dedicated targets. Check coverage of your exact sites on both before choosing.[26][3]
No-code startAI Studio offers five no-code apps, including AI-Scraper, AI-Crawler and Browser Agent, and new users start with 10,000 free credits.[11]The Free plan costs $0 and gives $5 a month to spend in the Store or on your own Actors, without a credit card.[26]Both let a non-developer try extraction for free. Apify states that its allowance renews monthly; the Oxylabs quick start does not say whether its 10,000 credits recur.[26][11]
MCP toolsOn the Oxylabs MCP server, Web Scraper API credentials unlock four scraping tools and an AI Studio key unlocks six AI tools; either set works on its own.[4]The Apify MCP server loads Actor search and execution, documentation tools and the apify/rag-web-browser and apify/web-fetch Actors by default, and a tools parameter narrows it to specific Actors.[27]Apify can expose Store Actors as agent tools, except the full-permission and rental Actors its MCP server excludes. Oxylabs documents a fixed set of ten tools, which is easier to review but less flexible.[27][4]
  6. ScrapingBee compared with Oxylabs

Verdict: Choose ScrapingBee when one scraping endpoint on a monthly credit plan covers the job and you want Auto-Mode to try configurations from lowest to highest credit cost for each page. Stay with Oxylabs when you also buy its proxies or its CDP browser and want them on one account with the scraper API.[28][29][1][8]

    Choose ScrapingBee when

    • Monthly volume fits a fixed credit plan, from 75,000 credits for $19 to 8,000,000 for $599.[28]
    • Agents in ChatGPT, Claude Desktop or Cursor need scraping tools through a hosted MCP server.[30]
    • MCP tool calls cost the same credits as the API endpoints they wrap, with no surcharge.[30]
    • You can try it with 1,000 free API credits and no credit card.[28]

    Keep Oxylabs when

    • Your own Playwright or Puppeteer code needs to drive a remote browser, which the Oxylabs Headless Browser supports over CDP; check whether ScrapingBee's HTML API and JavaScript scenario instructions cover the same steps.[8][29]
    • Finance wants prices quoted per 1,000 results for each target and for JavaScript rendering, rather than a credit allowance whose use depends on each request's settings.[2][29]

    Limitations to account for

    • A request costs 1 to 75 credits depending on JavaScript rendering and proxy tier, and the AI extraction parameters add 5 credits.[29]
    • Plan prices exclude VAT.[28]
    ScrapingBee compared with Oxylabs
    CriterionOxylabsScrapingBeeWhat it means
Rendering and anti-bot handlingThe Web Scraper API handles proxy rotation and anti-bot systems itself, and a request turns on a headless browser for JavaScript-heavy sites by setting render to html.[3]Auto-Mode tries configurations from lowest to highest cost, stops at the first that works and charges only for it: 1, 5, 10, 25 or 75 credits, or nothing if all fail.[29]ScrapingBee can pick the rendering and proxy tier for you under a cost cap. On Oxylabs you decide when to render, and the per-result rate rises when you do.[29][2]
Throughput limitsIf a domain's success rate falls below 40 percent over five minutes, Oxylabs limits requests to that domain to 1 per second until it recovers.[6]Each plan sets a concurrent request limit, from 25 on Hobby to 400 on Business +.[28]Oxylabs slows a failing domain automatically, so watch per-domain success rates; on ScrapingBee, size the plan by how many requests you need in flight at once.[6][28]
MCP authenticationThe hosted Oxylabs MCP server reads credentials from request headers: Basic auth for the Web Scraper API and X-Oxylabs-AI-Studio-Api-Key for AI Studio.[4]The hosted ScrapingBee MCP server at mcp.scrapingbee.com/mcp takes the key as an api_key query parameter, and Claude Desktop and Cursor connect through the mcp-remote wrapper.[30]Header credentials keep the key out of the server URL; a key in the URL is quicker to paste into a client such as ChatGPT's app setup.[4][30]
Security documentationThe Oxylabs trust center lists ISO/IEC 27001:2022, SOC 2 Type 2 for Scraper API and Web Unblocker, SOC 3, CCPA and GDPR.[5]The ScrapingBee trust center lists SOC 2 Type II and GDPR, with the SOC 2 report and a pentest summary available on request.[31]Both publish audit evidence. Ask each for the current report that covers the exact product you plan to buy.[5][31]
