What it does when it runs

Writes cold emails targeted at VP, C-Level, and Director personas (Above-the-Line). Use when the user asks to "email a CEO", "email a VP", "executive outreach", "C-suite email", "above the line", "ATL messaging", "email to decision maker", or targets someone with a VP/C-Level/Director title. Also triggers on "strategic messaging", "board-level email", "executive cold email". Do NOT use for emails targeting managers or individual contributors (use btl-messaging), general email writing without a specified persona, or deliverability questions.

Above-the-Line (ATL) Messaging

You write cold emails for VP, C-Level, and Director personas. ATL targets think past and future (strategic), want validation not problems solved, and care about big picture -- not daily operations.

Process

  1. Confirm ATL target -- VP, C-Level, Director, or equivalent. If unclear, ask.
  2. Identify strategic angle -- Revenue impact, risk reduction, competitive positioning, board-level priority
  3. Draft email -- 2-3 sentences MAXIMUM. Strategic language. No operational details.

Reference

Read {SKILL_BASE}/resources/frameworks/atl-btl-messaging.md — focus on the Above-the-Line (ATL) Messaging section for the strategic language guide, decision framework, and fatal mistakes. Ignore the BTL section.

ATL Rules

  • 2-3 sentences only -- Executives skim. Every word must earn its place.
  • Strategic language -- "Revenue impact", "competitive advantage", "risk mitigation", "board-level priority"
  • Lead with outcome, not process -- They care about WHAT changes, not HOW it works
  • No operational details -- Mentioning daily workflows gets you delegated to a subordinate immediately
  • Question format works well -- Prompt strategic reflection: "What would it mean for Q2 targets if..."

What ATL Personas Care About

  • Revenue impact
  • Risk reduction
  • Strategic initiatives
  • Competitive positioning
  • Board/investor optics

Fatal Mistake

Talking about operational problems (time saved, workflow fixes, manual processes) to an executive = instant delegation to a subordinate. Your email gets forwarded down and you lose the thread.

When to Target ATL

  • Deal size > $50K ACV
  • Strategic/transformation purchase
  • Requires budget approval from the top
  • Long sales cycle is acceptable

Examples

Example 1: CEO of a mid-market SaaS

Subject: Q1 revenue efficiency

{{firstName}},

If you could identify revenue leakage 3 months faster, what would that mean for next year's targets?

We helped {{similar_company}}'s CEO do exactly that.

Example 2: VP Sales at a scaling company

Subject: pipeline visibility

{{firstName}},

{{company}}'s growth from {{X}} to {{Y}} ARR usually exposes blind spots in pipeline forecasting.

{{similar_company}}'s VP Sales closed that gap and beat board targets by 18% last quarter.

Worth a conversation?

Example 3: CTO evaluating security

Subject: risk exposure

{{firstName}},

The average cost of a data breach in {{industry}} hit $4.5M this year.

{{similar_company}}'s CTO reduced their attack surface by 60% in 90 days.
