Clay vs Clearbit: Compare orchestration with the current HubSpot path
Our assessment: for a new purchase, compare Clay’s orchestration model with the current HubSpot enrichment path, not an assumed new standalone Clearbit subscription. Clearbit’s official support says it no longer offers new standalone subscriptions and directs future needs to HubSpot’s Breeze Intelligence. Existing Clearbit customers have a different contract and access question. This guide separates those cases, checks current HubSpot documentation, and offers editorial buying criteria rather than a hands-on product or coverage benchmark.

On narrow screens, scroll the table horizontally.
| Decision | Clay | Clearbit / current HubSpot path |
|---|---|---|
| New buyer availability | Evaluate a Clay workflow and plan | No new standalone Clearbit subscriptions; HubSpot recommended[2][4][5] |
| Operating scope | Managed or own-key provider orchestration | Current HubSpot enrichment populates CRM contact/company properties[2][7] |
| API assumptions | Connection availability is provider-specific | Legacy Clearbit keys restricted by account history[2][6] |
| Contact starting point | Configure inputs and multi-provider email discovery | Contact enrichment uses name and existing work email[3][7] |
| Usage units | Actions plus marketplace Data Credits | Ordinary HubSpot enrichment does not consume HubSpot Credits[1][7] |
| Overwrite review | Define destination field policy in your workflow | Existing values kept unless selected overwrite behavior applies[1][7] |
The old comparison hides two different buyer populations
Clearbit’s purchase and account-creation pages explicitly say new standalone subscriptions are no longer offered. They recommend HubSpot’s Breeze Intelligence and distinguish supporting current customers from opening a new standalone account. That is the current official buying direction retrieved for this guide. A comparison that offers new buyers a legacy Clearbit subscription as an ordinary checkout alternative would be misleading even if old integration documentation remains online.
Existing customers should not infer from that statement that every contracted API or integration has stopped. Their task is to confirm current entitlement, renewal terms, supported endpoints, and intended use. New buyers instead need to evaluate HubSpot’s present enrichment offering against an orchestration workflow. Keep the two decisions separate: “should we replace a working legacy integration?” and “what can we buy today?” have different migration costs and acceptance requirements.
[4][5][6]CRM enrichment and net-new email discovery start differently
HubSpot’s current getting-started guide says contact enrichment uses first name, last name, and work email, while company enrichment uses company domain. Its primary description is filling and refreshing properties on CRM contacts and companies. For an inbound contact whose work email is already known, that may align directly with the job. It is not evidence that the same feature can replace every name-and-domain email-finding workflow.
Clay’s Work Email waterfall explicitly discovers and validates work emails using multiple providers in sequence. Its account system also supports managed providers and supported own-key connections. Our assessment favors comparing Clay when the unresolved problem is building a qualified contact set, combining niche research, or controlling several provider steps before activation. If the only problem is missing standard properties on existing HubSpot records, evaluate the native enrichment route before creating a second operating surface.
[7][3][2]Legacy API documentation is not new-account entitlement
Clearbit’s API-key support page says keys are available for accounts created in 2023 or earlier and that later signups do not have free or paid plans with keys available. It also restricts key visibility to administrators. Read this as an account-history rule documented by Clearbit, not a guarantee that any old key grants every endpoint or every use indefinitely. Verify the contract and account before designing a replacement or expansion.
Clay’s integration-account documentation says some integrations support only managed accounts while others also support your own keys. The existence of a provider name in a catalog is not proof that your organization can connect a newly purchased legacy subscription. For a proposed workflow, require evidence of the supported action, required inputs, credential type, allowed output use, and destination. Do not plan a new API architecture from a familiar brand name alone.
[6][2][4]Enrichment must respect field ownership
HubSpot documents automatic, individual, bulk, and Intelligence-tab enrichment, with permissions and subscription conditions. Automatic enrichment is off by default and must be configured for contacts and companies. Its FAQ says existing values remain unless you select overwrite during manual enrichment or enable overwrite of incorrect enrichment values. These are concrete controls to review before an enrichment pilot touches production segmentation or routing fields.
Our recommended field policy distinguishes human-confirmed data, provider-enriched attributes, and calculated qualification. Use a hypothetical inbound-routing case: preserve a salesperson’s verified territory assignment while adding an enrichment-sourced company size. If the sources disagree, store a review state instead of turning a fresh provider value into automatic truth. With Clay feeding HubSpot, agree on the same ownership boundary so two enrichment routes do not repeatedly replace each other’s output.
[7][1]Do not recycle legacy Breeze credit arithmetic
The current July 2026 HubSpot guide says ordinary data enrichment does not consume HubSpot Credits, while smart properties do. It also lists subscription eligibility and warns that seats or credits are required for certain features. Therefore a blanket “each enrichment costs Breeze credits” comparison is obsolete for the documented standard feature. Do not call the whole workflow free either: existing HubSpot subscriptions, required access, and any distinct paid features still matter to the buying decision.
Clay’s cost model separates orchestration Actions from marketplace Data Credits. Own-key provider use removes corresponding marketplace data charges but retains Actions and external provider billing. Compare incremental spend for the specific required job, including workflow maintenance and any subscriptions you cannot cancel. An editorial CRM unit is total incremental cost per correctly enriched eligible record that your process uses, not per field attempted. Avoid exact dollar rankings without matching the purchased scope and actual account terms.
[7][1][2]Review participation and retention separately from enrichment quality
HubSpot says enrichment draws on its commercial dataset, third-party sources, and public information. The current guide describes circumstances where limited business contact information can contribute back to its commercial dataset and distinguishes continuous-only enrichment. It also says turning off enrichment stops future activity but does not remove already enriched CRM information. Review those settings and terms through your organization’s data-governance process before enabling broad automatic enrichment.
For a practical evaluation, choose representative known contacts and company domains, record the existing properties, and define which missing values count as useful. Evaluate match eligibility, correct values, conflicts, and actual use in scoring or routing. For a legacy Clearbit cutover, map property names and downstream dependencies first; for a new Clay route, document providers and acceptance rules. Keep discovery, enrichment, CRM writeback, and any campaign activation as distinct approval stages. None of these features establishes blanket permission to contact every enriched record.
[7][6][3][1]Frequently asked questions
Can a new customer still buy standalone Clearbit?
The retrieved official Clearbit purchase and account pages say new standalone subscriptions are no longer offered and recommend HubSpot’s Breeze Intelligence for future needs. This guide does not treat legacy signup or API documentation as evidence of a currently open standalone purchasing path.[4][5]
Does this mean all existing Clearbit APIs are shut down?
That conclusion is not supported by the checked pages. Clearbit says it is supporting current customers, and its API-key help describes access for older accounts. Existing customers must confirm their own supported endpoints and contract. Availability for one legacy account cannot be generalized to a new buyer.[4][6]
Does HubSpot charge credits for ordinary data enrichment?
The current getting-started guide says data enrichment does not consume HubSpot Credits; smart properties do. Subscription, seat, and feature eligibility still need checking. Use the current feature documentation rather than legacy Breeze credit examples when estimating the proposed workflow.[7]
When should a HubSpot customer choose Clay as well?
Our assessment is to add an orchestration layer only when native property enrichment leaves a demonstrated gap, such as multi-provider work-email discovery or custom acceptance logic. First define inputs, required outputs, field ownership, and incremental cost. An extra tool is not justified merely because it can enrich the same existing CRM records.[7][3][1]
