Apollo vs Cognism: Email-led execution or phone-data evaluation?
Our assessment: evaluate Apollo for a defined prospecting-to-sequence workflow; evaluate Cognism closely when usable mobile numbers and phone-verification operations are central to the sales motion. That is not a claim that Cognism always wins on phone quality or that Apollo is limited to email. Both have current API-enabled enrichment scope. This documentation-based guide separates vendor claims from buyer acceptance criteria and does not present DNC screening as permission to contact every record.

Choose from the cost of the sales activity, not the data field
Apollo’s official references connect filtered people search, enrichment, contact creation, and sequence enrollment. Our editorial recommendation is to evaluate that path when the team’s core activity is a reviewed outreach campaign and the requirement is a complete operational chain. Cognism’s pricing page describes Standard and Pro prospecting packages, API and MCP access, CSV enrichment, and a separate CRM-enrichment offering. Do not compare only a downloaded contact file if either proposal includes broader workflow scope.
For a phone-led team, the expensive failure may be a rep spending time dialing a wrong person or an unusable number. For an email-led team, it may be incorrect employer identity, validation failure, or enrollment reconciliation. Define that failure before selecting a provider. Buying phone verification has a different value when reps actually call the target segment than when numbers are collected merely because a package includes them.
[1][2][3][6]Phone verification is a vendor method, not a guaranteed outcome
Cognism’s Diamond Data page describes phone-verified mobile data and a verification process, while its pricing page places on-demand mobile verification in Pro scope. The page also publishes connect-rate marketing claims. This guide does not adopt those claims as independent evidence that your campaign will achieve the same results. Ask how the proposed package identifies phone-verified records and whether on-demand verification applies to your target roles and regions.
Run a controlled evaluation only through your organization’s approved outreach process. Distinguish wrong person, wrong company, disconnected number, relevant voicemail, correct person reached, and no answer. No answer is not by itself proof that the number is wrong, and a successful conversation is not by itself proof of the provider’s freshness method. Separate data quality from calling time, rep behavior, and your contact policy when interpreting the result.
[5][6][2]Resolve the person before revealing expensive details
Apollo enrichment supports identity inputs and returns match confidence. Its reference warns that a broad name-only request can produce a successful response without enrichment. Provide the employer domain or a known profile identifier where available and review ambiguous matches. Do not request every phone merely because one enrichment endpoint can do so. Contact-detail spending should follow acceptance of the person, account, and current role.
Cognism’s dedicated usage guide recommends searching without the contacts segment, choosing the required people, and revealing contact data for those records only. That is an operationally useful boundary for either product: qualification first, contact details second. In a hypothetical executive-search list, normalize company domains and verify responsibility before retrieving emails and phones. Record missing information honestly instead of substituting a similar title holder and counting the row as complete.
[2][7]DNC controls do not replace your activation policy
Cognism describes cross-checking phone data against DNC lists. Its API endpoints include account compliance settings showing countries where phone numbers are masked and geographic restrictions excluded from results. Those are concrete controls to inspect during a procurement review. Ask how your selected workspace applies them and what happens when a returned record lacks the contact field your downstream workflow requires.
Our recommendation is not to turn provider screening into a universal legal safe harbor. Your organization must separately decide which channels, regions, audiences, and contact circumstances it may activate with qualified advice where needed. Maintain your own suppression records and ensure an enrichment refresh does not restore someone who has opted out. Evaluate Apollo and Cognism against the same organizational policy, rather than applying stricter standards only to the product with more prominent compliance marketing.
[5][8][3]A search token is not an enrichment credit
Apollo’s People API Search uses zero credits and omits contact details. Its enrichment and other API endpoints use rules tied to the data returned, operation, configured waterfall, and plan. Phone or waterfall work can finish asynchronously; the current reference documents webhook and polling handling. Account for these stages in the integration rather than treating a submitted request as a completed usable phone lookup.
Cognism meters returned search rows with search tokens and revealed person contacts with credits. Its dedicated metering page also says count calls consume a search token, although its endpoint summary presents inconsistent count wording. Use the dedicated guide and confirm the account’s live contract before budgeting. Paging through many unqualified rows can consume search allowance even without revealing contacts. Reducing page size and narrowing filters therefore affect more than response performance.
[1][2][4][7][8]Buy the required verification and destination scope
Cognism’s pricing is tailored to product, team setup, and use, with Standard and Pro scope and CRM enrichment available separately. The retrieved material does not establish a fixed subscription dollar price. Ask for the included seats, search-token allowance, reveal credits, verification eligibility, API access, CRM delivery, and overage terms. Do not assume phone-verified or on-demand services are interchangeable simply because both involve mobile numbers.
Normalize Apollo’s proposal to the same accepted prospects and activity requirements. An editorial phone-led unit is total contract, usage, integration, and operating cost per accepted reachable target, with your definition of reachability stated. For an email-led motion, use validated destination-ready contacts instead. Include any sequencer or dialer that remains necessary. Choose from measured segment results and the actual quote, not a broad assertion that one provider is cheapest, more compliant, or universally more accurate.
[6][5][4][3]Frequently asked questions
Is Cognism only relevant to European prospecting?
The retrieved Diamond Data page describes global phone-verified contact scope. That is not proof of equal coverage in every region, and it does not justify limiting evaluation to a single geography by stereotype. Test the actual countries and roles in your account universe.[5]
Does DNC screening make every call lawful?
No universal permission follows from a provider’s screening description. Cognism documents DNC checks and workspace compliance settings, but your activation decision still needs your organization’s channel, regional, and suppression policy. Do not treat a populated phone field as authorization to call.[5][8]
Does Apollo support phone enrichment?
Yes. The current people-enrichment reference documents phone retrieval and phone waterfalls, including asynchronous completion. Evaluate returned identities and usable numbers under the same quality criteria as Cognism rather than assuming Apollo is email-only. Confirm the selected account’s credit and API entitlements.[2][4]
Why compare tokens and credits separately?
Cognism uses search tokens for returned rows and credits for revealed contact details; Apollo applies its own endpoint-specific credit rules. A workflow can exhaust search capacity before contact reveals run out. Model qualified discovery, detail retrieval, and activation separately so a nominal allowance does not conceal the limiting stage.[7][4]
