Mautic

Free your marketing - open source marketing automation.

Visit Mautic

Mautic is an open-source marketing automation platform: campaign builder, email and landing page builders, contact management, and a REST API with webhooks. Its defining property is not a feature but a licence - you self-host it, which the project frames as no vendor lock-in and true data sovereignty. It is community-governed with a public GitHub repository, a plugin and theme marketplace, and an official hosting partner for those who do not want to run it themselves.

What is Mautic

Vendor's own claim

Mautic is a Symfony-based PHP application you install and operate yourself. That makes the cost model fundamentally different from SaaS marketing automation: there is no per-contact or per-seat licence, but there is a server, an email-sending path, upgrades and security patching to own. Development happens in the open through pull requests on GitHub under a published project governance model, with a developer forum, Slack channels and weekly contribution sprints. Documentation is versioned per release from Mautic 4.x onward - worth noting, the developer documentation carries a prominent note from the project that its content requires a major update and that the legacy material is outdated and potentially inaccurate.

Ideal customer profile

Our read

Organisations with a data-sovereignty, compliance or vendor-independence requirement that outweighs the convenience of SaaS, and that have - or can hire - the technical capacity to run a PHP application in production. The project's own case studies skew to high-volume multilingual senders and CMS-integrated setups such as Drupal.

Who should look elsewhere

Our read

Free software is not free to operate. Mautic is a self-hosted application, so a team without server administration, deliverability and PHP upgrade capability is taking on work a SaaS vendor would otherwise absorb - and if you outsource that to the official hosting partner, the entry plan starts in the hundreds of euros per month, which is not obviously cheaper than commercial alternatives. Developers should also weigh the project's own warning that its developer documentation needs a major update and that the legacy version contains outdated and potentially inaccurate information; building a custom plugin or integration means leaning on forums and source code more than on docs. And this is marketing automation, not sales engagement - there is no dialer, no sequencer for reps, and no prospect database.

Mautic FAQ

Is Mautic really free?

The software is open source with no licence fee, and the project's pitch is self-hosting for data sovereignty and no vendor lock-in. The costs are operational: hosting, email sending, upgrades and whatever engineering time running it consumes.

Our read
What if I do not want to run the server myself?

Three tiers are described - Essential (shared hosting, from €247.50/mo billed annually or €275/mo quarterly, up to 50K emails a month and 50K contacts), Professional (dedicated hosting and dedicated IP, from €1237/mo, extendable to 3M contacts) and a custom Enterprise tier up to 6M emails a month with SSO. These are a partner's prices, not a Mautic pricing page - confirm current terms with Dropsolid.

From official docs
Are there per-user charges?

On the managed plans the partner states no: the entire team can be brought on with no restriction on the number of users and no extra cost. Self-hosted has no seat licence at all.

From official docs
Can I send from my own domain?

Yes - and multiple domains can be authenticated and used within a single Mautic installation, per the managed-hosting FAQ.

From official docs
How do I integrate Mautic with other systems?

Three ways per the vendor: out-of-the-box plugins for CRMs, SMS providers and similar; webhooks for anything else; and the REST API when a deeper integration than a plugin is needed. The project has published a specific argument for preferring webhooks over API polling, on the grounds that polling cannot know when remote data changed and runs into rate limits.

From official docs
How current is the developer documentation?

Not very, by the project's own admission. The developer documentation opens with a note that the content requires a major update and that the legacy documentation contains outdated and potentially inaccurate information, with an invitation to help rewrite it. Versions are available from Mautic 4.x onward via a version switcher.

From official docs
Where do I get support?

Community forums are the free support route, with multilingual categories. Developers are pointed to the Developer Forum, which the Product Team monitors, plus #dev and #t-product on Slack; a Commercial forum exists for paid work. Paid support comes via partners in the project's directory.

From official docs
How is the project governed?

Openly - all fixes and improvements go through pull requests on the public GitHub repository, under a published Mautic Project Governance model, with contributions required to follow Symfony coding standards except where documented deviations apply.

From official docs
Can I extend it with plugins and themes?

Yes. There is an in-application Mautic Marketplace for finding and installing community plugins and themes from the UI or the command line, and the developer documentation covers building custom plugins and themes.
