What it does when it runs
Show Me You Know Me" (SMYKM) cold email skill — use this whenever the user wants to write, draft, or improve a cold outreach email, sales email, or prospect email. Also trigger when the user asks to research a prospect before outreach, build an email sequence, personalize a pitch, or get a reply from an executive. This skill applies Sam McKenna's proven SMYKM methodology: hyper-personalized subject lines, authentic research-backed openers, objection-preempting value props, and human closing language. Use this skill even if the user just says "help me reach out to X" or "write an email to [prospect/company]" — don't attempt cold emails without this skill.
Read from the skill and the 4 files bundled beside it. A skill’s own description is written to be selected by an agent, so it describes the job and not the dependencies.

Show Me You Know Me — Cold Email Skill
A complete system for writing cold emails that get opened and replied to, based on Sam McKenna's Show Me You Know Me (SMYKM) methodology. This approach averages 43% open rates and 20% reply rates vs. industry averages of 6% and 0.9%.
The core philosophy: people want to be seen as people, not pocketbooks. Every email you write should prove you did your homework on this specific human — not their job title.
Workflow Overview
When asked to write a cold email or outreach:
- Gather prospect intel → See
references/research-checklist.md - Build the email → Follow the 5-part structure below
- Draft the sequence → See
references/sequence-guide.md - Review against the don'ts → See
references/anti-patterns.md
The 3 Layers of Prospect Research
Before writing a single word, understand your prospect across three layers:
Layer 1 — The Human
- LinkedIn profile: headline, About section, recent posts, shared content
- Common connections you share
- Career history: prior roles, promotions, career pivots
- Personal signals: dogs, hobbies, alma mater, causes they post about
- CRM history: have they interacted with your company before?
Layer 2 — The Company
- Website: press releases, values, recent announcements, charity/CSR work
- Podcasts, conference talks, or articles their executives have given
- Funding rounds, acquisitions, leadership changes
- Prior relationship with your company (churned client? long-time partner?)
Layer 3 — The Space / Vertical
- Industry-specific language (law firms say "clients" and "business development", not "leads" and "sales")
- Trends, headwinds, or regulatory issues hitting that vertical right now
- Where you already have a footprint — use existing clients as proof points

The 5-Part Email Structure
Part 1 — Subject Line (MOST IMPORTANT)
The subject line alone determines whether the email gets opened. Rules:
- Must be specific to this person only — if 500 of their peers could receive it, it's wrong
- Should make no sense to anyone except the recipient (that's the goal)
- Can be longer than 4 words — use
+signs to chain items:Switzerland + Le Dip cheeseburger + [Your Company] - Reference something from their professional LinkedIn or public content — never from private social profiles
- Mutual connections go in the subject line:
From a friend of [Name]
Formula options:
[Personal anchor] + [Professional anchor] + [Your company or value hint]
From a friend of [mutual connection name]
[Specific achievement of theirs] + [Your company name]
Part 2 — First Sentence (2nd MOST IMPORTANT)
Subject line + first sentence = preview text — what they read before opening. This seals the open.
Option A — Introduce yourself with warmth:
"Hi [Name], we have yet to be properly introduced, but I'm [Your Name], and..." (Signals: "we should know each other" — pairs perfectly with a strong SMYKM subject line)
Option B — Lead directly with SMYKM:
"Hi [Name], I saw your recent post about [specific thing] and [authentic personal tie]..."
Never start with: "I found your profile on LinkedIn and wanted to reach out." This is the #1 signal of a lazy sales email.
Part 3 — Value Proposition
Your value prop is NOT what you do. It's the problem you solve for THIS buyer.
Structure it in two beats:
- State the challenge you've seen with buyers like them (specific, not generic)
- Pre-empt their most common objection inline — don't wait for them to raise it
"If you're anything like our clients, [specific challenge they likely face].
We [how you solve it]. I also know that many [their role] tell us [common objection] —
but rather than [what they already have], our team [why you're different]."
Part 4 — Social Proof (optional but powerful)
One line. A specific client, number, or result relevant to their vertical or role.
Part 5 — Close (The Humble Ask)
Never use a calendar link. It's presumptuous and puts the burden on them. Never ask: "Do you have 15 minutes tomorrow?" — too specific, lets them say no.
Use this instead:
"Do you have time over the next week or two to learn more? Let me know what works for you and I'll send a calendar invite accordingly."
This hands them control of timing while keeping you in control of the scheduling.
Quality Checklist Before Sending
- Would this subject line make sense to someone other than this specific person? (If yes → rewrite)
- Did I pull the personalization from professional/public sources only?
- Does the first sentence avoid "I found your profile on LinkedIn"?
- Is my value prop a problem I solve, not a feature I have?
- Did I pre-empt the most obvious objection?
- Did I avoid a calendar link and a too-specific time ask?
- Is the email longer than a tweet but shorter than a novel? (3–6 short paragraphs is ideal)

Key Metrics to Know
| Metric | Industry Average | SMYKM Average |
|---|---|---|
| Open rate | 6% | 43% |
| Reply rate | 0.9% | 20% |
| Meetings booked | Low | 41 per 500 emails (Sam's BDR team result) |
Quality always beats quantity. One great SMYKM email outperforms 50 generic blasts.
