What it does when it runs

Use when a B2B team needs lead magnet or content offer ideas that attract its ideal buyers and lead naturally to a sales conversation. Generates offers matched to buyer stage and job to be done, scores them for fit, effort and conversion path, decides gating, and outlines the chosen asset with its promotion and follow-up plan.

Lead Magnet Ideas

This skill generates content offers that a target buyer would genuinely want, ranks them, and plans the path from download to conversation. The best lead magnets solve a narrow, immediate problem that sits right next to the problem your product solves.

When to use

  • Inbound lead volume is low, or leads are poor fit.
  • An existing ebook or whitepaper gets downloads but no pipeline.
  • Outbound needs a value-first offer instead of a meeting request.
  • Paid campaigns need something better to promote than "book a demo".

What you need

Ask for these before ideating:

  1. ICP and personas: who you want to attract and what they are responsible for.
  2. Offer: what you sell and the core problem it solves.
  3. Buyer questions: what prospects ask in sales calls, support tickets, communities or search.
  4. Assets and expertise: proprietary data, templates the team uses internally, benchmarks, expert staff, customer results.
  5. Capacity: how much time and design help is available.
  6. Current funnel: how leads are followed up today and what happens after a download.

Process

  1. List the jobs. Write down 8 to 12 tasks the persona must get done that relate to your offer: plan a budget, choose a vendor, build a report, justify a hire, run a process. Lead magnets that help with a job get used; those that only inform get skimmed.
  2. Generate across formats. For the most promising jobs, propose ideas in several formats:
    • Templates and checklists: fast to consume, high perceived value, easy to produce.
    • Calculators and scorecards: personalized output; strong signal of intent when completed.
    • Benchmarks and original data: high authority, shareable, harder to produce.
    • Swipe files and examples: collections of real-world examples, anonymized.
    • Short guides and playbooks: step-by-step methods, best when narrow.
    • Assessments or audits: a review of the prospect's own situation; closest to a sales conversation.
    • Live sessions: workshops, roundtables, office hours.
  3. Check the bridge. For each idea, write how using it leads to the problem your product solves. A great lead magnet makes the next step obvious; a popular one with no bridge produces contacts who never buy.
  4. Score the ideas. Rate each 1 to 5 on: audience fit (attracts the ICP, not everyone), urgency of the job, bridge strength, production effort (5 means easy), and differentiation (could a competitor publish the same thing tomorrow?). Pick the top two or three.
  5. Decide gating. Gate when the asset is high value, the audience expects to trade an email for it, and you can follow up meaningfully. Leave it ungated when reach, sharing or search visibility matters more, or when the asset is mainly for sales to send. A hybrid (ungated preview, gated full version or tailored output) often works well.
  6. Outline the winner. Give a title, promise, sections, length, the data or expertise needed, and the call to action inside the asset.
  7. Plan promotion. Channels where the persona already is, plus how sales and outbound will use it.
  8. Plan follow-up. Define what happens after download: a sequence that helps them apply the asset, a qualification step for high-fit leads, and a clear handoff rule to sales. Follow-up should continue the help, not jump straight to a demo pitch.

Quality checklist

  • Each idea is tied to a specific job the persona performs.
  • Every idea has an explicit bridge to the offer.
  • Ideas span at least four formats.
  • Scoring is shown and the top pick is justified.
  • The gating decision is reasoned, not assumed.
  • Follow-up continues delivering value and defines a sales handoff rule.
  • Success is measured by fit and pipeline, not only downloads.

Common mistakes

  • Broad ebooks. "The ultimate guide to sales" attracts students, competitors and job seekers. Narrow topics attract buyers.
  • No bridge. A fun quiz unrelated to your product creates a list that never converts.
  • Gating everything by default. Some assets do more good ungated, building reach and search presence.
  • Downloads as the success metric. Measure how many downloads come from ICP accounts and how many reach a conversation.
  • Immediate demo pitch after download. Calling someone minutes after they download a checklist usually feels intrusive. Offer help applying it first.
  • Copycat assets. If ten competitors already publish the same template, yours needs proprietary data or a sharper angle.

Example prompts

  • "Give me 15 lead magnet ideas for heads of RevOps at mid-market SaaS companies."
  • "Our ebook gets downloads but no pipeline. Help me design a better lead magnet."
  • "Should we gate our new benchmark report? Walk me through the decision."
  • "Score these five lead magnet ideas and outline the best one."
  • "Plan the follow-up sequence after someone downloads our pricing template."
