Instantly vs lemlist: Email Fleet or Multichannel Relationship Workflow?

Our assessment: start with Instantly when your central design problem is operating email campaigns across a selected mailbox fleet; evaluate lemlist when the sequence itself needs connected LinkedIn actions and channel-aware contact handling. This is a choice about work organization, not a declaration that one product wins every outbound motion. The guide uses public documentation rather than hands-on testing, and separates documented capabilities from our recommendations. Confirm the required channels and permissions in your actual subscription.

Choose the sequence you can responsibly operate

Instantly’s campaign settings describe account selection, rotation, sending windows, reply-stop behavior and campaign ownership. lemlist documents LinkedIn steps inside a campaign sequence, including profile visits, connection invites, messages and acceptance conditions. The reviewed Instantly article is not a complete inventory of every capability, so this comparison does not claim that unreviewed channels are absent. It identifies the clearest documented operating models for the decision at hand.

For an email-led motion with a separate human follow-up process, centralizing campaign controls may be the important requirement. For a relationship-led motion, a planned LinkedIn branch may be valuable only if a rep can own the sender profile and subsequent conversation. Our assessment is to select channels because they suit the prospect and the team’s capacity, not because a longer sequence appears more sophisticated.

[3][8]

A LinkedIn sender is not an interchangeable mailbox

Instantly allows multiple email accounts to be selected for one campaign and rotates them. lemlist’s LinkedIn instructions require a connected account and a prospect profile link, and standard LinkedIn messages generally require a first-degree connection. InMail is a different step with its own sender prerequisites. The documentation also distinguishes a LinkedIn URL condition from Sales Navigator links, which can affect which branch a lead follows.

Our recommended design names the relationship owner before constructing the sequence. An AE whose profile sends the connection request should not discover that another person is handling the resulting discussion without context. Map the email sender, LinkedIn sender and reply owner for every cohort. If a prospect lacks the necessary profile data, choose an explicit alternative rather than interpreting a skipped LinkedIn step as successful outreach.

[3][8]

Translate the meaning of an opt-out, not just the address

Instantly’s Blocklist tab blocks email addresses and domains across the workspace, including ongoing campaigns. lemlist distinguishes contact-wide Do not contact from restrictions on individual emails, numbers, LinkedIn URLs and domains. A variable-level block can leave other channels available; a contact-wide block is intended to prevent outreach across channels. These are not interchangeable representations of a person’s request.

When moving from email-only operations into a multichannel sequence, review the original preference wording. An address that bounced and a person who asked for no further contact are different cases. Do not convert a broad refusal into permission to use another channel simply because the exported row contains only an email. Maintain a person-level exclusion record outside the import file when the source system cannot express the full intended scope.

[1][5]

Preserve conversation state before introducing another channel

Instantly’s export article separates contact data, event activity, mailbox inventory, campaign sequences and blocked entries. lemlist’s lead CSV includes basic identity, LinkedIn URL, phone number and custom variables, and can be filtered by campaign status. Neither article establishes that one vendor can ingest the other’s active thread or restore its precise current step. Data portability is not the same as continuation portability.

Build a migration disposition for each person: eligible new outreach, a specific remaining follow-up, owner-managed conversation or excluded. For an active email conversation, our preference is to retain the existing owner and thread rather than launch a new social introduction. A planned channel change should acknowledge prior contact in its messaging. Save the source timestamp and the decision reason so the next operator can understand why an otherwise valid record was not enrolled.

[2][6]

Rebuild the stopping rules and schedule deliberately

Instantly documents separate controls for stopping on replies, handling auto-replies and stopping a company’s campaign after a colleague replies. lemlist documents skipping future restricted steps when a contact or variable is unsubscribed, while unrestricted steps can continue. These settings answer different questions: whether an email reply pauses follow-ups, whether the whole organization should stop, and whether a specific communication channel remains eligible.

Write down the intended behavior for a positive reply, a refusal, an out-of-office response and a missing LinkedIn connection. Then configure and inspect those paths in the destination. Avoid a literal transfer of delay numbers when the new workflow adds another channel: the total contact pressure has changed even if each individual timer looks familiar. Our recommendation is a coherent relationship policy rather than independent email and social automations racing to the same person.

[3][5][8]

Compare entitlements through the actual workflow

Instantly V2 introduces granular scopes and multiple API keys, and its documentation says a new V2 key is required rather than reusing a V1 key. lemlist documents generating named keys, checking last use and revoking a key by deletion. Its LinkedIn guide includes plan prerequisites. This guide does not assume that access to an account implies access to every channel, connector or administrator function.

Ask for a workflow-specific entitlement statement covering users, mailboxes, LinkedIn senders, API operations and the exports you need. Budget also for the person who monitors manual exceptions and conversations. Before cancelling Instantly, export while the required main subscription is active. For either product, inventory the integrations that still depend on old credentials before revoking them; a forgotten exclusion sync is more consequential than an unused reporting widget.

[4][2][7][8]

Use a relationship-preserving acceptance test

Our suggested evaluation includes an internal sample with an email-only lead, a connected LinkedIn lead, a lead with only a Sales Navigator link, a bounced address and a person-wide refusal. Inspect the branch choice, rendered personalization, responsible sender and restriction state without sending a production campaign. Check domain formatting carefully: Instantly specifies a plain domain, while lemlist’s unsubscribe variables use an @ prefix.

Choose Instantly if the email campaign boundary is sufficient and you can manage later relationship work clearly. Choose lemlist if its documented channel paths solve a real gap and you can preserve person-level preferences throughout them. Do not switch merely to seek a warmup reset or an assumed engagement multiplier. The meaningful outcome is a maintainable process with correct next actions and accountable conversations, not a vendor badge.

Frequently asked questions

Is lemlist automatically the better choice for every multichannel team?

No. The documented LinkedIn steps are useful only when your leads have the required identity data, your senders meet channel prerequisites and someone can handle the relationship. Our editorial preference is to avoid adding channels that create more unowned activity than meaningful follow-up.[8]

Can an email unsubscribe leave LinkedIn available in lemlist?

A variable-level restriction can leave unrestricted channels available, whereas Do not contact blocks the contact across channels. Preserve the scope of the original request. A technical path remaining available does not itself establish that contacting the person through it is appropriate.[5]

Can I paste the same blocked-domain file into both products?

Review the format first. Instantly documents domains without an @ prefix, while lemlist documents domain unsubscribe variables beginning with @. Also review scope: an email/domain blocklist is not a complete substitute for lemlist contact-wide restrictions.[1][5]

Does switching preserve active email threads?

The reviewed export articles do not establish automatic cross-product thread restoration. Preserve the activity and message evidence separately, retain the assigned owner and approve the next action explicitly. Keep active conversations out of a generic first-touch import.[2][6]
